ticalc.org Introduces New In-Program Ads
Posted by Michael on 1 April 2007, 02:06 GMT

[Sample Program]As many of you know, in November we began running ads on ticalc.org in order to cover our bandwidth costs. While this trial run has proven highly effective, we are still falling short each month on ad revenue. Feedback has shown that our visitors are overwhelmingly against any form of graphic banner ads, so we are instead turning to something more creative.

Beginning in the next two weeks, all BASIC programs uploaded to our archives will automatically be edited to include pay advertising, similar to what is shown in the animated screenshot. This will allow advertisers to pay lump sum fees for perpetual product placement in the BASIC portion of our file archives and should solve our immediate financial situation.

We will attempt to balance the ad placements so that they are non-intrusive; however, as the editing is done by automated scripts, there may be a few instances of inappropriately placed advertising. Please vote on the survey to let us know what you think.

I do not want any kind of ads on my files. This is harming programming style. My own Pico Fermi Bagel 3 is not going to have ads on it. Why can't people donate money???

No, it's for Windows, too; I'm using it right now. There's a Windows version that comes with an installer for Gtk+ 2.0, which will let you run various open source programs in Windows.

I don't know how to operate "TiLem". if I ever use Linux, it would be:
Enterprise Linux
Fedora Core 7
Fedora Core 8
Ubuntu Desktop Edition 7.04 end of support 2008
Ubuntu Server Edition 7.04 end of support 2008

I don't know how to operate 'install-sh'.
I tried ./install-sh
Help me...

I agree! I WOULD RATHER HAVE FLASHING GRAPHIC ADS THAN SOME ADVERTISER INVADING MY HARD WORK! In-program ads are an insult to us programmers, it devalues our content, and most of all, interupts the program itself. What kind of game would be fun with advertisements? Calculator or video game, these FULL SCREEN PROGRAM-STOPPING ADS ruin the entire purpose for which the program was written. PLEASE consider other ad forms than disrupting the privacy (and hard work) of the supporters of this web site.

Not True!
John Romero  Account Info

I do! Did. But then I realized that BASIC sucks. Now I program in ASM. But You ARE wrong! Many people who just need a quick equation solver, or should I say slow, don't have the time nor the incintive to write a program in the terse, difficult language that ASM is. So they turn to the much easier language, BASIC.
